There’s an old English saying that goes, “birds of a feather flock together.” Well, the coupling of Stella Wade and Carol Sweat could also be termed as, “oil and water, they don’t mix.” Both women possessed the characteristics of a Type B personality, which are persons who don’t stress over most issues and are regarded as low-key individuals. However, they can create Type A behavior—that being, highly ambitious, rigidly organized, and status conscious—in their subordinates. Aside from those traits, Carol and Stella were as different as day
and night. Stella planned in a strategic manner, using tactics aptly suited for the military and manipulating the delegation process in a masterful fashion. Carol, on the other hand, believed in buying influence, networking through high-level individuals and bullying people if it was needed. What also separated the two was their respective willingness to win at any cost. Carol was the clear leader in that category.
“Hello, may I help you?” I answered my mobile phone. “Mr. Mayor, it is Stella Wade.”
“Well, to whom or what do I give thanks for this honor?” I curtly
replied. “The last time I was in your presence was at the City Council meeting, when your downtown business package was voted down.”
After ObAmA “You’re right, voted down with the help of a fierce lobbying effort from your office,” Wade said. “But all of that aside, Curt, I didn’t call you to talk about your indifferent attitude toward me.”
“You and I could share stories about our attitudes toward each other,” I said. “I know you’re calling about that bogus effort to repeal the twenty-second amendment. I can’t believe you’re part of that. You don’t like the President that much, as to have him in Washington for a third term. Something about that seems mighty strange, Stella. Or maybe sinister is a better word.”
“Contrary to your way of thinking, Mr. Mayor, I like President Obama,” Wade said. “But if his policies ain’t working for me, I’d rather see him go back to organizing communities. The parties make no difference to me; I just want to get paid. But I do like the President. Now, as for the purpose of my call. I didn’t know you were close to Tommy Nelms.”
“First, for the record, I am not a President Obama hater. Second, I didn’t know Tommy Nelms and I had a close relationship. Who told you that?”
“Every time we talk he mentions your name, as if the two of you did some deals before you became mayor.”
“No deal ever happened. Nelms and his cronies tried to get me to agree to some shady arrangements that would get government contracts for their fake businesses, like was done when Joe Goddard was mayor. Tell you what. I’ll save you some time. Google my name, you’ll see the whole thing on the Internet. That’s when you’ll find out why Tommy Nelms does not like me.”
“I already did it. You’re a pretty clean brother, other than what happened during your first election. Boy, they really tried to mess you up.
